What is the best way to physically move to New York City?

I'm looking into moving to either Brooklyn or Queens this spring/summer after I have a job lined up. What I'm trying to decide is the best way to get all of my stuff there. I have a bed, and some other small furniture that I haven't decided if I should move or sell? I'm not sure the best way to move everything or if I sell it, a cheap way to replace it (buy a bed on Craigslist freaks me out). Any advice?

  1. I would say It would be easier to just transport it. When your starting a new job your not going to want to be worrying about furnishing your place. I would get a Uhaul trailer or truck and just drive it there yourself, you could even make the trip with a friend who is willing to go with you. That way you can save money and not worry about getting nasty beds from Craigslist
  2. Unless you have really nice stuff and a lot of it the smart thing to do is sell it all, move with just boxes of your personal items and replace everything else once you move in. The cost of replacing it probably won't be much more than the cost of moving it all across country. You would have to buy a brand new bed, you can't do used bedding, but all of the furniture and accessories you'll need can be purchased locally from thrift stores and antique shops once you get settled into the new place. You can also order it all new from Ikea and have it shipped right to your door.
  3. you can keep the bed and sell everything else
  4. Sell the furniture, keep the personal stuff. There are 1000s of furniture stores from dirt cheap to designer fabulous all over the city. Ikea delivers.
