What type of housing allowance is the service member entitled to?
I work in a finance office here and Germany and we have encountered an interesting situation. I will list the details below: Service member is single and has never been married. Service member has full legal and physical custody of a child per a court order. Service member PCSed from the states to Germany and was authorized to move his dependant from his previous duty station to a designated location in New York with the birth mother. Service member sent dependant to the birth mother because there is a deployment occurring within a couple of months. Service member is currently residing in the barracks until the deployment. What type of housing allowance is the service member entitled to? If you have an answer, please state references or links to substantiate your answer. Thanks.

- Hello "C" It's simple. He gets BAH at the married rate with dependents. He has a legal dependent. and he is deployed where he can not take his dependent. He keeps getting the same BAH as he was getting before his PCS to Germany with his dependent. It's all part of his Child Care Responsibilities form he has to maintain as a single parent. It's all in the finance regulations. Nothing complicated. There are probably 100 or more soldiers in the same situation. You have Master Sergeants and Captains in finance. This is a job for them to deal with. Best wishes, Larry Smith Senior Master Sergeant, USAF (Ret.) First Sergeant
- Joint Federal Travel Regulation, Vol 1, Chap 10 has the answer you are looking for. Although why a Finance clerk does not know this is beyond me? Or, why someone in your office can't answer this is troubling. Troop is a geographic bachelor, who gets BAH for whever the dependant is, and may also be eligible for OHA if he wants to live off-base.
- BAH with dependents. they are ALSO eligible for family Sep once that becomes a factor. this situation is neither interesting nor rare.. happens all the time.
