How to obtain a career based in National Park Service / Search and Rescue?

This seem like a perfect way to both serve people and embrace the wilderness. Can I make money this way? If not, that's fine. Whats the first step towards achieving this goal?

  1. Go to www.usajobs.gov and type "search and rescue" in the keyword field. Then read some of the vacancy announcements to get some ideas of how to proceed. Search and rescue seems to mostly be a part of the park ranger (protection) position. Get a degree in natural resources protection or park and recreation management and serve in the military for awhile to increase your chances of becoming a park ranger, who does search and rescue. When no one is lost in the woods or stuck halfway up a mountain, however, the park ranger protects the park and the patrons of said park. You can get some idea of the salary by reading the vacancy announcements, too.
  2. You may or may not be interested in this site too. http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/res.nsf/doc212?OpenForm USAJob search is a great place to look for a park ranger position- just as said above. :) Good luck
