What is a good and legitimate site on which I can find inexpensive vehicles?

I recently totalled my car and am looking for something new...and by new, I just mean new to me. A used vehicle is perfectly acceptable, and given my budget, that's really all I will be able to afford. Preferably AWD or 4WD. I had been looking at the ads on KSL (the classifieds for Utah news) and found a 2002 Jeep Liberty with 83,000 miles on it for $3000. Unfortunately, it was sold before I had a chance to buy. Anyway...that is just to give you an idea of for what I am looking. My price range is about $2000 to $4000, but I would still like a quality, nice-looking vehicle. I live in Wyoming, so little Hondas and things like that just won't cut it. I would prefer to be able to buy from a person face-to-face as I am scared of getting scammed. I do live in the middle of nowhere, so I am obviously more than willing to travel to find a deal. Do you know of any websites that offer things like this? I know this was long and rambling, and I really shouldn't be this picky after totalling a car, but I truly am a good driver and would like an inexpensive car to last me at least a couple of years.

  2. Buying from a private party is a crap shoot. You might find a ggod deal, you might buy a real loser. A new car dealer has a reputation to protect, so they don't want to unload a real junker on a possible repeat customer. I sold two cars on Craigslist. Consider that the sellers are not paying any fee, so they have nothing to lose by pricing very high to test the market. People like me who don't want to waste time, price the car low and sell inside of a week. Find somebody willing to let you take the car to be inspected by a mechanic. If the seller won't work with you, walk away. $4000 won'y buy a quality, nice looking vehicle with 4WD nor AWD. I don't accept the premise that little Honda'a won't cut it in Wyoming. There are several Honda dealers out there who sell every little Honda they can get their hands on. But, if you need something to drive over rocky and rutted unpaved roads, get a Ford F150. You can probably buy a 10 year old F150 for $4000. If you want one with 4x4, add another $2000.
