I am a hard working single mom who wants to find a safer area for my family to live in, I am a full time student and I work so I do not have alot of money but I want to live in a nice area, So if anyone out there knows how to get low income housing or maybe a habitat for humanity home please let me know. THANKS

  1. For low income housing you have to go to your local housing authority & apply. This is not a quick fix. The waiting lists are years long in many areas. I don't know anything about habitat for humanity.
  2. my sister is in a similar situation to you... she has applied for low-income housing in 2 different counties... she will have an average of 3 years wait for any unit to come available... and all but one of the long list of properties is in horrible areas with very high crime. only 1 out of over 60 properties is in a nice, safe area... and they are quoting "10 years or longer" because of how long the wait list is for that property. I can understand that you want your children in nicer areas with better schools.... unfortunately in many areas of the US, that kind of criteria doesn't often exist with "low income housing" Habitat for Humanity... you can check their website... I have only heard of 1 of those actually happening (I happen to know someone who volunteered on the home-crew).. and the person who it happened for said something about it having taken her 6 years of re-applying to HfH before she was selected. If you read on their web-site.. you must be financially stable before you will be considered... good credit & sustaining a savings account are part of the criteria http://www.habitat.org/getinv/apply.aspx
  3. You apply with the housing authority. You have to work at leasts 35 hours a week and you have to collect child support. They will charge you one third of your income and child support for rent.
