I need to find a place to stay (apartment, etc). Where do I start looking?

Greetings. I'm in my early 20s and I need to find my own place to live. However, I'm new to all this and I don't know where to start. For example, I went to one online apartment finder and searched my zipcode and searched within 30 miles, but there were only a few apartments offered and they were expensive luxury apartments and condos. Where can I search for cheap apartments for someone on a budget? I work in fast food, so I can't afford to spend more than $300 (the absolute highest I can pay is $400) a month on rent. Can anyone help me out?

  1. Check the classified ads. If that doesn't yield results, look in the yellow pages under "apartments." Call and see what they have available. Check with trailer parks, they often have places they own and rent out. Ask your friends and co-workers for recommendations. Consider getting a room-mate. Sometimes these arrangements don't work out, but many times they do. My son and one of his Army buddies recently rented a house together. Neither one could afford it on their own, so they split the cost of everything for a two-bedroom house. It is working out nicely for them.
  2. room mates is a good idea. also, here are websites that i copied from another yahoo answer for help. best regards. realtor.com trulia.com zillow.com easystreetrealty.com homes.com backpage.com kijiji.com ziprealty.com rentnice.com forrent.com apartments.com choiceofhomes.com rentalhouse.com frbo.com
  3. Find the local newspaper or the website of the newspaper. If you can't find anything there you need to cruise the cheaper neighborhoods and look for "for rent" signs. Think like a landlord, where would I advertise if I had a cheap place to rent? Good Luck.
  4. The really cheap places may not advertise in your local newspaper. Here the ads have gone up so much in price, no one advertises in the daily paper. But we have the Bargain Book that comes out on Wednesday for various parts of the city. Those ads used to be extremely cheap but now they are just reasonable. Everyone advertises there. Way back when I first moved away from home, I got a really good deal and rented some rooms in someone's house. They never bothered me or went through my stuff and were really nice. The rooms were clean and nice and cheap and I was extremely lucky. Also you may find a cheaper motel that rents rooms by the month. That's usually pretty cool because you get a pool. I lived in one of those after my divorce and had a great time and a million laughs. What a crowd lived there. We called it Heartbreak Hotel. Such a lovely place to get a divorce. All you can do is ask around and see what comes up. Stay away from Craig's list.
