What's included with rent from an apartment?

I'm going through a divorce and trying to find a place for my soon to be ex to live in. What is usally included in an apartment rent in term of utilities? It's been so long since I was in on that I can remember

  1. Most of the time nothing is included unless the ad mentions utilities included. The person will have to have utilities put in their name. Let your ex find his/her own place. The newspaper's classifieds for your area is a great place to start. Be careful with Craigslist scams - they are out there..
  2. The best thing you can do is to ask at each complex what (if anything) is included with the rent. Some include water & trash pick up; others don't. IMO, an apartment that includes all utilities is going to be pretty expensive.
  3. Usually sewer and trash are included, you pay for whatever else you want.
  4. In my city, the only time any utilities are included is if the ad specifically states this. However, water/sewer are frequently included in rent. Some areas provide free trash service as well... others don't. Your best bet is to call several places (although not sure why your ex isn't finding his/her own place) and inquire about whether any utilities are included.
  5. Utilities would usually include water, gas, electric, sewer, trash, etc. But not all do. It varies from building to building. Also, sometimes rent is just rent, but they may also include utilities and maybe air conditioning. Some places might even include cable/phone/internet. I find that apartments that don't include utilities in the rent can be pretty pricey in the long run.
  6. Every rental is different. You'll find some where all utilities are included, some where none of them are. You'll also find places where all you pay is electric and everything else will be included. Don't forget to ask about water, sewer and trash. Most of the time they are included, but not always
  7. Is your ex-husband mentally disabled and cannot look for his own place? Some rentals include utilities like electric or gas. Some include parking and some dont. Most landlords pay hot water and garbage. Some apartments pay for basic cable. They usually charge pet deposit if they accept pets.
