- Try Rancho Santa Fe
- I lived in San Diego for 8 yrs. Although I have no suggestions for housing (just look around), I do recommend you put your kids in a "magnet" school (plenty of them and doesn't take long to get them in).
- a lot of navy families live in the East Lake area of Chula Vista. Good schools not too far from base, the only problem is traffic going north in the mornings is bad.
- If you can afford it, Coronado right over the bridge is safe, beautiful, close and great schools. Get what you pay for.
- Here's the thing - you are getting BAH which will cover renting costs, but I highly doubt your housing allowance will cover the costs of living in a home that will be space enough for two kids, plus being in a nice neighborhood, plus being in a good school district. Unless your husband is getting at least O4 BAH, military housing is economically a better option if you want everything you've mentioned. Your housing allowance covers all housing costs besides rent if you live in military housing, including house maintenance, utilities, landscaping, trash collection, pest control, and just about anything else you can think of in home care that would normally cost you money out of pocket. Considering the cost of living in California, it's seriously your best option. Of the housing districts, Coronado's Strand I is probably best, because it has the best school district against the other Lincoln housing areas, and it's one of the safest places in San Diego. Take my situation for instance: my father was a CMC with a BAH over $2000. If we wanted to live near his base, with two kids in our family, near a good school district, in a good neighborhood, we'd have had to pay well over $2000, all costs considered. Instead, we lived in Coronado for our BAH alone. Coronado is in the top ten highest income per capita towns in San Diego county, so it goes without saying that the city and the school district are well taken care of. The home we lived in would cost much more than our BAH for a civilian living in that area. On top of that, it's 5 miles from NAVBASE San Diego; ten short of your 15 mile limit. The gist of all this is that you get much more bang for your buck if you live in housing. By all means you can choose to live in a civilian neighborhood that suits your needs, but it will cost more. http://www.lincolnmilitary.com/sandiego/
