List Only

Where in the United States is section 8 housing not waitlisted?

I qualify for section 8 housing due to disability/no money. Anywhere in the US I look, it's full or waitlist is closed.

  1. EVERY county in EVERY state in the US has a waitlist....most are closed. Waitlist times can vary from 1 year to 8 years.
  2. You can only apply where you live, so it does not matter. All have wait lists. Atlanta does it by lottery each year, there is no traditional list there, you could wait 6 month, you could wait 16 years. You have to live in Atlanta for an entire year before you apply and you have to stay for each yearly draw.
  3. To qualify for Section 8 you must be a senior or have a family. Half the people on waitlists are probably disabled also. There are some preferences given to homeless people, veterans, those displaced by the government and some others. Most people have a 5 year wait to get a voucher. You can only apply in the state where you reside and if your county is closed to new applications you can try another county in your state. I just answered another Section 8 question about Akron, Ohio and that was open.
