How does one disk jockey?

I really want to start a private party DJing business; how would I go about this? I'd also like my brother to DJ my party, what equipment do we need (at the very minimum)? Much appreciated, if you don't know, helpful links would be GREaT too!

1. My friend and I do DJ for hire and the equipment that we have is mixer, dual cd player 2 speakers with towers to mount them on and 2 wireless mics the system cost in total $750.00. We play burned CD's via I-Tunes account, purchased CD's and we have an adaptor to play I-Pad players. Eventually we want to get lights and other light effects when we get more money invested ie: DJ gigs. I hope this helped.
