How to apply for low income housing?

My husband and I have a very low income and I'm having a baby in two months. We currently live with my mom and seriously need our own place. I need help on applying for low income housing. I've heard Section 8 is great but I don't can't find how to apply for it. Any other low income housing suggestions is great. We live in Manteca California and hope to stay close by because that's where my husband works. Thank you!

  1. Section 8 wont help you because it takes several years to get a voucher. You can go to your county or city Housing Authority and get a list of privately-owned subsidized apartments that are Title 42 or rural listings. There are also properties called tax credit properties which have a few apartments at a lower rent. You should have waited to have a baby after saving up enough money to rent an apartment. Where you live it is much better than the bay area. San Francisco is about 10 years long. You live in a pretty low rent county.
  2. You can't possibly be low income enough to qualify in San Joaquin county with only one baby. You can not be low income by choice, both parents have to work at least 35 hours a week, which will be over the limit for a family of 3. The lowest rent you would pay even if you qualified is 763 a month, and there are plenty of rentals for less then that available in that area.
