How to Apply for Low-Income Housing in Indianapolis?
My husband and I need to find out how to apply for low-income housing in the southwest Indianapolis area. We have a 3 year old son. My husband lost his job in May and is searching for work right now. We live with my mother right now, and we receive food stamps, but really need to get our own apartment as soon as possible. Does anyone know how we can qualify for housing assistance?

- You need to apply through the county welfare office, but I hope you know the waiting list is measured in YEARS, not days or weeks. And THAT just gets you into the program, and NOT into an actual apartment.
- Apply with the local housing authority. Expect the wait to be VERY long. Also, low income housing means that you MUST have some sort of income. Being unemployed will not get you approved.
- go to indyhousing.org then go to "our communities". I think there are 7 or 8 different family housing complexes. You will have to contact them to find out if they have a waiting list and what their income requirements are. Section 8 is what takes years, not public housing. Don't listen to either of the boneheads that have anwsered, they don't know what they are talking about.
- LOL! Over 31 million Americans are currently looking for work. The real unemployment rate was 22.3% in May & is expected to rise when June figures come in. Half the population are, like you, dependent on taxpayer-paid benefits already. Only 43% of the working age adult population is paying any taxes at all. Taxpayers are broke. Federal, state, county & city govt are broke, charities are broke. Just like you & I. You do not qualify for housing assistance, you are not going to get any, and many of those who got it in the past have to lose it. The demand for housing assistance is so great and waiting lists are so long that many cities only open application periods every 2-3 yrs. Average wait exceeds 5 yrs nationwide, with many areas having waiting lists of 7-10 yrs. Priority is the elderly & disabled, second comes those who are either elderly or disabled - those who are no longer capable of working, have no family to help them, and have nothing but their Social Security to live on. You have 2 adults who are capable of working, yet apparently, you aren't working or looking for work while your hubby is out of work? You must be employed (unless over 65 and/or permanently & totally disabled) to qualify for HUD & other housing assistance. Apt complexes with low-income set-asides: you must be employed with income between minimum & maximum income limits. Waits running 1-2 yrs after approval. There is no help for you. If you are already out of rent money when your hubby lost his job only last month, then you were mismanaging your finances long ago. Both you & hubby need to get jobs. This is Depression-era unemployment, Depression-era economy. Get real and start busting your buns or you are not going to survive. Things are tough. You have to get a whole lot tougher.
- Tp qualify for low income housing you must have some type of income coming in, because low income housing pays only 70% of your rent and you pay 30%. Not to mention there is a very long waiting list for low income housing.
- I'm not sure where all of their building are but here's the name & # of a place I know about "Partners In Housing" 3176331861, best wishes to u & your family
