Where can I find legitimate listings for cheap New York City apartment rentals?

I plan to move to Manhattan/Brooklyn within the next 4 months. Ideally, I would like to spend around $1000-$2200 a month for a 2 bedroom. At first I didn't think that was possible, but I found at least two websites that had listings suitable for my budget. Is it better to actually walk the streets in the city in search for rentals or perhaps go to a real estate agency?

  1. No such thing. Minimum for a two bedroom is 2500 in Brooklyn. What you found is a scam. Apartments in Manhattan are found through a broker or word of mouth. With a vacancy rate of less then 2% they are gone quickly
  2. You should check out MySpace NYC. They can show you the best no fee apartments in Brooklyn, no matter what neighborhood. Visit http://myspacenyc.com and find awesome Brooklyn luxury apartments.
