how do you apply for low income housing in a different state?

I want to move from Michigan to California and I'm wondering if it's possible to apply for low income housing there from here??

  1. You don't. You have to be a legal resident. In CA you have to live here 6 months before you can apply. I do not think any counties are taking applications now anyway, the waiting lists are all over 5 years.
  2. You go the the County in Calif. website. Dept of Housing and fill out an application. You do realize that relocating without a job makes you ineligible. You must be employed 32 hours a week to even qualify
  3. You can not pre-apply. You must move here (California) and become a legal resident of the state (30 days to 6 months depending upon the conditions) and THEN you can apply (and wait - section 8 housing is at least a year wait I hear).
  4. You must be a resident of the place you apply to. So you would have to move there first.
  5. I dont know what kind of low-income housing you are asking about. A local or regional housing program? separate from HUD Section 8, or HUD rural housing. I dont know what programs these are. There is public housing but the wait is years. Dont you think if people could apply for any kind of cheap housing they would do so in their own state and not have to take people from other states. The funding is always local. That's why you have to be a resident of a certain county to apply. There are 38 million people in California, and losing social programs all the time. CA_SURVEYOR: Most Housing Authorities are open maybe once a year to accept new applications but you should mention that the waitlist is several years long. In San Francisco and Los Angeles it is about 7 to 10 years for a voucher. California is second to Michigan in unemployment. Unless you get lucky and find a job right away, dont come to California. You also have to have the courage to take a chance and leave your state. You cannot find out about life by asking questions on Yahoo. You have to experience life yourself.
  6. As long as a housing authority is accepting applications, you can apply from anywhere in the world. There is no REQUIREMENT that you live in California for a specific amount of time. Most PHAs (Public Housing Authorities) do however have PREFERENCES, and often one of the preferences is a local preference. This means that while the PHA may accept your application, they will issue assistance to local families first. Since many PHAs have wait lists of 5-10 years, this preference could be tantamount to a non-local applicant NEVER receiving assistance. Likewise, a PHA may have a PREFERENCE for applicants who are employed, but applicants who are not employed may still apply. Funding is administered locally, but the funds for Section 8 and Public Housing are generally federal.
  7. No. You have to be a legal resident to apply there. Looks like you will have to pay for it yourself.
