Why is housing discrimination against the law?

GOOD EXAMPLE Lets say a person who has a mental problem and sees a therapist wants to rent an apartment from me, If i turn her down because she sees a therapist, I would be in violation of the fair housing act, and i could be fined $5,000 and up to one year in prison. Thats according to the United Stated department of housing and urban development. Is that fair?

Public Comments

  1. It is fair.
  2. ...........no, but it was meant as in you can't discriminate against people of different ethnicity. I'm so politically correct.
  3. Yes, it's fair. Who would you rather rent to - someone who's seeing a therapist and dealing with her problems, or someone who's NOT dealing with his/her problems, and could potentially do something horrible to the place? Seriously - the person who's seeing the therapist is a much better bet; she's being realistic, dealing with her issues, and coping; who are you to say that such a person has no right to live where she chooses?
  4. Show me your medical degree or therapist's license, and then you have the right to say whether the person is fit to live where he chooses. Don't have one? Then all you are is a prejudiced jerk.
