What are some cool, affordable neighborhoods in Chicago?

I am in my early 20s and moving to Chicago for work. I want to live in a cool, affordable neighborhood with no crime and close to public transportation and/or hot spots. I would ideally like to live by myself; however, I don't mind living with a roommate depending on the cost... I will be looking on craigslist so neighborhood suggestions would be great! Thank you!!!

1. My pick would be Arlington Heights, accessible to the IC and close to O'Hare. Not sure about affordable but you will get what you pay for. As for "no crime"you aren't going to get that anywhere in greater Chi-town.
