Income tax question? Can I claim my apartment rent or commuting mileage on my taxes?
I own a home and my family lives in approximately 340 miles from where I work. I commute back and forth every 10 days and stay at home for 4 days and then stay in an apartment in the city that I work out of. Is any of driving mileage or apartment rent deductible on my taxes? It would be nice to get some kind of break as I really can't afford to move. Thanks for any help.

- Sorry. You can not do that unless you had a side business where you travel expenses are deductible.
- Only if this was a temporary assignment intended to last less than 1 year.
- Probably not. Working away from home like that is only deductible if the assignment is temporary (expected to last less than 1 year). If your job is opened ended (more or less permanent), your tax home is where you work. You just have one heck of a commute and commuting is not deductible.
- Is this a temporary assignment for under a year, or permanent?
- assuming this choice of a job was your's to make not something your employer requested no
