Which 5 boroughs of NYC would have the cheapest apartment rent for something somewhat impressive?

Also: include NJ. I need to be close to the Bronx but dont really want to live in the Bronx. $1200 per month rent is the most I can afford and even that is pushing it.

  1. I would look at Northern Manhattan (the Washington Heights/Inwood area). It's pretty affordable up there. I would also look at parts of Northern Queens near the Throggs Neck or Whitestone Bridge. However, Northern Queens is pretty expensive for the most part.
  2. NYC apartments are filthy, ugly and disfunctional and yet the prices are astronomical. So not worth it!
  3. Inwood in upper Manhattan (the part west of Broadway is nicer). Almost anything else would be a pretty long trip to the Bronx, and not necessarily a better price.
  4. Yes, I agree that your best bet is probably Inwood or Washington Heights. Just want to point out that for $1200, even in those less expensive neighborhoods, you will probably only find studio apartments which will not be too impressive. But keep in mind that that same studio in other parts of Manhattan would be at least $1800-2000.
  5. There are nice areas in The Bronx. Try Pelham Parkway, Pelham Bay, Morris Park, Riverdale, and Throgs Neck. I hope this information was very helpful.
