How do I get a cheap apartment in New York City?

I'm looking for a place to rent in NYC for around $500 or less a month, I'm young but I do have great references. I need a place as soon as possible, I've tried craigslist, and I don't have the time to wait for low-income application processes. I'm willing to be a roomate, or a handyman, or do just about anything for just a little place to keep my clothes and a bed. PLEASE HELP!
