buy or rent used car for a USA nationwide trip?

i am planning to go on a trip around the USA in july/august and i was thinking about renting or buying a used car. i want it to be the cheapest ever :) so i don't want to spend more than $1200 and i would like to sell it at the end of the trip. i would arrive from Spain to New York city. 1) is it possible to buy a used car even if being a foreigner? do i need some special documents? 2) do you recommend buying o renting? which is more economical? 3)if buying, where would you recommend me to look? in location or by web site. 4)is it better to buy once outside NYC (economical)? where would it be a good place to buy? 5) i looked on craigslist and some cars cost like $40 or less, what is the swindle? 6)which type of car would you recommend? one that doesn't consume a lot of fuel. Diesel, gasoline? 7) do you know anyone who has travelled that way? thanks a lot!

1. Bueno, aqui en los EU los carros Diesel no son como los de Europa. Por lo tanto los de gasolina los vas encontrar mas facil. Renta el vehiculo mejor. Sa le con garantia. Uno usado puedes que corra con problemas y venderlo, no vas a recibir buena plata por el. No es lo mas barato si no lo mas confiable. Si se rompe en la carretera te va a costar mas que rentar. Yo viajo por los EU con la Mili. No es difficil, es mas importante un coche que no te des problemas que guardar un par de Pesetas. Yo rentaria o cojo un vuelo mas cerca de las destinacion. Buena suerte........
2. i would rent and here a a few reasons why (1. if you rent and it breaks down the company your renting from repairs it or gets you another car if it cant be repaired right away if you own it and you pay for repairs and you sit for as long as it takes to repair) (2. a rental car has regular maintance done the on you buy who knows) (3. at the end of your trip you turn it back in no problem if you own it and want to sell at the end of your trip no way of telling how long it will take to sell it and if your having to make a flight back home and still have the car you have two choices miss the flight till the car sells could be months or leave the car and cut your loses or give the car away and still cut your loses)
