- Pretty broad question. A budget would have been a helpful piece of information to provide.
- Nothing in Austin is reasonable, especially around The University. There are buses that run from certain areas to the campus so your best bet is to check on the routes and then check on those neighborhoods.
- There are several..but your best bet is to check out the Daily Texan (UT newspaper). It is geared towards the students and several ppl advertise housing in there. http://www.dailytexanonline.com/
- North Campus is more grad/law student territory and not as expensive as you might think. I rented a small apt in a 4plex, 5 m walk from campus for $650+ util a couple years ago. NC kinda begins to overlap with Hyde Park as you get up past 35th st. Hyde Park is a nice-house neighborhood, more expensive and you only wanna live there if you have several roommates and share a house (not a bad idea if you do well with roommates) West Campus (west of Guadalupe) is Student Land, where most of the greeks are. You party? Mind loud neighbors? You can find some garage apts and duplexes that are cheap, but it's competitive and they tend to be not so well maintained... and it's beyond Gated Apt Land where the rich kids live right next to campus. Interesting neighborhood... feels more 'in the thick of things' ... cheap, but too slummy for most grads. East of the freeway is French Place which I am not that familiar with the cost of ... but it always seemed to me like mostly nice places to live, more of a neighborhood feel, very quiet and more diverse. Might be Hyde Parky but a tad cheaper. I hate apartment complexes and will sacrifice for a more private entrance, so I always looked for one-bedrooms in duplex/fourplexes... and I found them, for 550-700, they're out there. I imagine you won't be able to live alone in a decent place for less than about 550 but you might get lucky. Look everywhere; I'd suggest you start with North Campus tho. (Closest to Eng too!)
